First of all, congratulations for a great choice you made for your baby and the environment. As for the mamas who aren't sure yet, stick with us and let us convince you that cloth diaper aren't as difficult or required a lot of work/time as many may think.

Welcome all and I look forward to a productive and active blog!

P.S. if you have cute pictures of you lil one bunz in cloth diaper and want to share you can either post it yourself or send it to me and I'll add water mark to your picture, so it doesn't end up at an unwanted site, and I'll post them here for you. We all LOVE to see cute and happybabybunz ;)

Introducing MVB program

I'm happy to announce my newest program: The MVB - the Most Valueable Blogger - program

What does this mean?

Basically it's very much like MVP in many sports. The most active in this blog will win something awesome!!!

So, all you need to do is be active in this blog, post comments, responds to comments. However, post such as "great post" "love it" and such doesn't count. Since this a moms helping moms blog I, therefore, expecting more than that.

I'll have a spreadsheet ready by the end of 3 months to prove that the winner is choosen appropriately.

Cloth diaper 101

Cloth diaper is like...ummmm...cooking, maybe, as it can by done in may ways and everyone swear that their "recipe" is better than the others. When you get a hang of it you can develop your own way to cloth diaper that work best for you, your husband, and your baby. And please don't forget to share your method. However, before then here's some basic information that will help get you started.

How to prep/priming cloth diapers

For all natural fiber such as Bamboo, Hemp, and Cotton:

1) Wash natural fiber, preferrably separate from each other and from other diapers as well, about 4-8 times before using them. However, you need to be sure that you're going to keep the diapers before you you prime them, as you will not be able to return them to the store*.
2) Wash your natural fiber cloth diapers on approximately 120 degree fahrenheit with just a little of detergent. There are a few brand of detergents that are specifically for cloth diaper, so check those out. However, many cloth diaper mamas swear by Tide, so perhaps you can give it a try too, but be careful it only needs just a little, a tsp or so.
3) Machine dry on hot heat

Tips: You may want to add a pair of your jeans, or two, to make it a full load.

*If you decided to prime your cloth diapers and end up not liking them you still can either sell them with discount online (diaperswappers, cottonbabies, hyenacart, and etc.)

Bleached prefold

1) Wash then dry (wash, dry, then wash again, then dry again, etc.) your bleached prefold for 4-6 times (the more the better, I found) in hot water and dry on hot heat and a dash of detergent

Unbleached prefolds

1) Wash then dry (wash, dry, then wash again, they dry again, etc.) your unbleach prefold for 10 - 12 times in hot water and dry on hot heat and a dash of detergent. Or you can also boild them for 10 minutes then wash, dry 6 times with a dash of detergent.

BG prep/prime process differ from the above a little, especially the AIO. So, please click on this link www.bumgenius.com/help.php under Q&A number 8 you'll find the instruction.

For all other diapers - wash in cold or warm water with a dash of detergent and dry in normal or warm heat.

The reason why natural fibers need longer prep/prime time is because they obtain more oil in the fibers, which make them less absorbance.

While this is a guide to prep/prime your cloth diaper, it's best to check care instruction of your cloth diaper!

Stripping

Stripping is a process that help with leaking or smelling issues. And each issue required different stripping process. So, it's crucial to identify your issue first. Also, you may need to strip your cloth diapers several times depends on how strong is your issue.

For leaking issues:
1) Start with clean diapers, wash your problem cloth diapers with blue formula of Dawn liquid dish detergent in hot water. One tblspoon for top loaders, one teaspoon for HE.
2) Repeat 2 times more but WITHOUT detergent.
3) Dry as normal

For smelling issues:
1) Start with clean diapers, wash your problem cloth diapers. inserts, covers, doublers, and etc. with blue formula of Dawn liquid dish detergent in hot water. One tblspoon for top loaders, one teaspoon for HE.
2) Wash the inserts and/or doublers separately from the covers and/or cloth diapers. in hot water Set covers and cloth diapers aside for now. Add 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach for top loader and the same amount for HE.
3) Once #2 is done add covers, cloth diapers to the load. Now you'll have everything together. Wash 2 times more with hot water but WITHOUT detergent.

Stripping is an important process, so take care to follow the instruction exactly.

Cloth diaper lingo

These are abbrevations, acronyms, and lingo that are used by most cloth diaper mamas. If I miss something let me know and I'll updated it.

covers - are diaper covers used for diaper that required cover such as fitted and prefold. It can be made out of plastic, fleece, wool, and more.
doubler - it's a flat insert that are used to increase the absorbancy for night time, or to be used with prefolds.
insert - similar to doubler but it use to insert into the pocket as it should not touch babies' skin.
liner - there are 2 type of liner, that I know of, fleece and disposable/flushable. Fleece helps absorb the moisture away from baby. The disposable/flushable are great as it can be rewashable if it's only wet or flushed it's full with "poop"
snappi - it's an alternative to pins that are used to hold the prefold together. It's easier to use, IMHO, and it comes in many pretty colors.
Sposies - short for disposable cloth diaper

Abbreviations

AIO - All in one. It's a type of diaper that doesn't required stuffing and cover. Great as daddy diapers ;)
BG - BumGenius
CD - Cloth diaper
DB - Dry Bees
FB - Fuzzi Bunz
GM - Goodmama
HH - Happy Heinies
LL - Little Lambs
OS - One size. Means one size fit all - it grows, extendable,with your baby
PF - Prefold. It has 2 kinds, Indian and Chinese Prefold.
PP - Piddle Poddle
PS - Perfect size. Means it comes with varrious size, like xs, s, m, and L. You need to choose size that fit your baby.
